zLib is a 'A Massively Spiffy Yet Delicately Unobtrusive Compression Library (Also Free, Not to Mention Unencumbered by Patents)' [ahem - that really is how the authors introduce it!] The compression algorithm used is essentially the same as used in PKZip and gzip.
